The Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick is a remarkable sign of God’s great love for us.

In the Bible, we read in the Epistle of st James:

“Is any one among you sick? Let him bring in the presbyters (priests) of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the power of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he is in sin, they shall be forgiven him“.

The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a particular grace of the Holy Spirit. It leads to strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that go with the condition of serious illness or the frailty of old age or disease. This assistance from the Lord by the power of his Spirit is meant to lead the sick person to healing of the soul (and also to a physical healing if that is God’s will).

The sick or the dying should not be deprived of this assistance, even if they are no longer able to ask for it themselves. To arrange for the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to be given to a loved one, please contact the parish office.
